Large Format Printer Buying Guide: Test Your Own Files
Send suppliers a representative drawing, a color-heavy page and a difficult file before the demonstration. Ask them to use the intended media and ordinary production settings. Review line detail, margins, color and the time to finished output.
A sample printed on special settings may look excellent but cost more or take longer than your everyday work allows. Keep a record of the settings used so the comparison is repeatable.
Plotter Width, Roll Handling and Paper Waste
Choose width from the jobs you actually produce. Consider roll changes, cut-sheet handling and the space needed to receive finished prints. Wider equipment can make larger work possible but may add unnecessary cost when most jobs are smaller.
Ask how the printer handles mixed sizes and whether useful nesting or job tools are included. Reducing reprints and wasted media can matter more than a small difference in equipment price.
Large Format Ink Costs and Maintenance
Compare the ink system, cartridge capacity and maintenance consumables for the proposed machine. Ask what routine cleaning involves and how long an infrequently used printer can stand before attention is needed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the model.
Request a running-cost example based on your sample files. Heavy coverage, media choice and repeated cleaning can change costs, so an unexplained price per print is not enough.
Wide Format Printer Service, Delivery and Finance
Confirm delivery access, installation, setup and operator training. Ask whether a service agreement covers printheads, parts and travel, and what response is available if the printer stops before a deadline.
Read the large format printer FAQs before choosing. Compare cash purchase, lease payments and any end-of-term obligation using the same equipment and service scope.
